To succeed in today’s competitive job market, preparation is everything. Whether you’re early in your career or looking to take the next step, interviewing is a skill you can master with the right strategy.
At LaSalle Network, we have helped thousands of job seekers prepare for and land roles across a range of industries. Below are our recruiters’ top strategies to help you stand out before, during and after your interview.
SET CAREER AND INTERVIEW GOALS
Before any interview, it is essential to define what you want. What are your short- and long-term career goals? How does this role help move you forward?
Hiring managers are not just looking for experience. They want to understand your motivation and how your goals align with the company’s mission. Be ready to articulate the impact you want to make and how your background supports that.
You should also work hard to understand the goals of the organization you are interviewing with and how your role could impact those goals. Then clearly articulate the strengths you bring to the table that could help your future team or company achieve their objectives.
PREPARE WITH INTENTION
Do Your Research: Read the job description thoroughly, explore the company’s website, and look into recent news or announcements. Study the team structure if it is public and check LinkedIn for current employees to gain insight into the company culture.
Practice Your Delivery: Even if you are confident in your background, practicing your delivery makes a difference. Mock interviews with a friend, mentor or recruiter can sharpen your answers and improve your clarity.
COMMUNICATE YOUR VALUE CLEARLY
Use Results-Oriented Examples: Instead of listing responsibilities, focus on achievements. What did you accomplish? Did you increase efficiency, generate revenue, or improve a process? Be prepared to quantify your impact.
Tell Stories, Not Just Facts: When asked about strengths or past experience, use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answer and keep it concise and compelling.
MAINTAIN CONFIDENCE UNDER PRESSURE
Interviews can be high-pressure environments, but how you respond under stress tells employers a lot about your leadership potential.
Stay Composed: Take a deep breath, maintain eye contact and listen actively. If you need a moment to think before responding, that is perfectly acceptable.
Share a Challenge You Overcame: Employers want to know that you can bounce back from setbacks. Prepare an example that shows your resilience and adaptability, even if the outcome was not perfect.
POLISH THE DETAILS
Dress the Part: Whether the interview is in person or virtual, your appearance should show professionalism and respect for the opportunity. Research the company’s culture to guide your wardrobe choices.
Use Strong Nonverbal Communication: Sit upright, nod as your interviewer speaks, and smile when appropriate. If virtual, ensure your camera is at eye level and your background is neutral and clean.
