8 Tips to Ace Your Virtual Interview

Virtual interviews have become an integral part of the hiring process, with many companies adopting them as the standard. To stand out and make a lasting impression, preparation is key. Here are eight essential tips to help you ace your virtual interview. 

1. Test Your Equipment in Advance 

If you are provided with a link to access the video interview, test it as soon as you receive it. Confirm that your camera, microphone and internet connection work properly. Practice with a friend using the same platform to ensure you’re comfortable and gather specific feedback on lighting, audio clarity and body language. This preparation reduces the risk of technical hiccups on the day of the interview. 

2. Prepare Your Backdrop 

Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a clean, neutral background. Prior to the interview, log on to check what’s visible on camera and remove anything unprofessional or distracting. If your space doesn’t allow for a quiet and organized backdrop, utilize the virtual backgrounds applications like Zoom or Teams provide.  

3. Prep Your Housemates 

Inform housemates or family members about your interview schedule. Ask them to minimize noise and interruptions. If you have pets, arrange for someone to care for them during the interview. If you live alone and have pets that may be noisy, let the interviewer know in advance to set expectations. Being proactive shows your professionalism. 

4. Be Ready 10 Minutes Early 

Log in at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time to ensure everything is ready. This extra time allows you to address last-minute issues and demonstrate punctuality. Also, different platforms perform system updates at the most inconvenient times, like at the start of an interview. Logging in early can help ensure your applications are all up-to-date and ready to go.  

5. Dress Professionally 

Appearance matters, even in virtual interviews. Dressing professionally impacts how the interviewer perceives you, signaling respect for the opportunity, attention to detail, and a commitment to making a strong impression. 

6. Speak Slowly and Clearly

Technology isn’t foolproof, and sound glitches can occur. Speaking slowly and clearly ensures that your responses are understood, even if there are minor connection issues. Pausing briefly before answering also prevents you from accidentally talking over the interviewer due to lag. Clear communication demonstrates confidence and thoughtfulness. 

7. Maintain Eye Contact 

Eye contact is as important virtually as it is in person. Look directly into the camera when speaking, rather than at your own image on the screen. This creates the impression of direct engagement and confidence. Minimize distractions by turning off notifications on your devices and closing unrelated tabs or apps. If needed, practice beforehand to feel comfortable looking into the camera.   

8. Take Notes and Prepare Questions 

Bring a notepad and pen to jot down important points during the interview. Prepare thoughtful questions in advance to show your interest and engagement. For example, you could ask about team dynamics, company culture or growth opportunities. Always give the interviewers a heads up that you are taking notes, so it doesn’t come across like you’re preoccupied with something else.
