8 Resources to Sharpen Your HR Skillset

The Coronavirus pandemic and the resultant increase in remote work has heightened the demands on Human Resources professionals around the world. In addition to ensuring the health and safety of their employees, many Human Resources professionals are working with a 100 percent virtual workforce for the first time. This requires a broader skillset to ensure employees remain engaged, motivated and safe as stay-at-home ordinances remain in place.

Whether job-searching or working diligently from home, under stay-at-home mandates, now is a great time for Human Resources professionals to take advantage of the time and online resources to build their skills with many associations and publications offering resources for free or at a discounted rate. We’ve outlined some of the top training resources below:

LinkedIn Learning – Take advantage of a free month being offered right now with its customizable learning tool that offers weekly courses ranging from 15 to 60 minutes that cover a range of topics pertinent to Human Resources leaders, including:

Oxford Home Study College – With 20 hours of course free learning, Oxford Home Study College covers essential topics like an introduction to HR management, recruitment & selection, and staff training & management. Once that course is completed, browse their library for related courses to tackle next.

Coursera – Start free courses today from some of the top universities worldwide like Rutgers, The University of San Diego, and the New York Institute. Through Coursera, they are offering free courses targeted to Human Resources professionals outlined below. You can also explore other topics in business, computer science, data science, language and more.

WorldatWork – Get certified for compensation, benefits and more from this leading global nonprofit organization. Visit their education and resources center for the most relevant trends in the industry today.

HR DIVE – This library of whitepapers, webinars and playbooks will help you brush up on everything you need to know as a Human Resources professional, from benefits to employee development. A couple examples:

Canva – Need to create branded company materials quickly for internal communication or campaigns? Start a free account on Canva and browse their library of hundreds of graphic design templates that are customizable and easy to use.

Toastmasters – Communication is an imperative soft skill for all Human Resources professionals. This is amplified in the wake of COVID-19 with the increased frequency of communication from Human Resources to employees, as well as the added complication of communication being virtual. Toastmasters is an organization that creates meetups in cities across the globe to coach on and practice public speaking for free. Many cities have gone virtual, conducting video meets up. Check your local chapter for instructions on how to join. Toastmasters also has an entire library of free videos to access.
