4 Common Fears in the Workplace

New Boss

Afraid of the new boss? The key is to start with a clean slate: don’t compare this boss to the last. Learn how they like to communicate (face-to-face, email, text) and understand the new expectations they have for your role. Adapt to their work techniques, but don’t forget to discuss personal goals and big projects you are currently owning. Speak your mind and voice opinions if you have certain work habits.

Terrified of walking into a room and not knowing anyone? It’s not always fun (okay, is it EVER fun?), but it is essential for a successful career. Next time you have an event, try having a specific goal in mind (e.g., pass out at least five business cards). Focus on listening to the conversation instead of trying to pitch your company. Our go-to trick: start at the refreshments table and make conversation with someone while they’re getting their food. It never fails!

Pushing to meet a deadline? Being overwhelmed with projects and unrealistic deadlines can lead to unwanted stress. Break down the project into smaller tasks. Schedule specific days on your calendar to work on each project with cushion time. Communicate if you’re behind, and don’t be afraid to ask your team for help! Lastly, talk through a timeline with your manager. If you know you won’t be able to meet a deadline, establish new strategies and goals.

Afraid you’re not acing that new role or project? Ask for feedback! From your manager, mentor, coworker… get different perspectives on your work and be open to constructive criticism. Visualize future obstacles and plan for the ways you can overcome them. If you mess up, it is OK. Everyone makes mistakes; take ownership, learn from them and find ways to kill it the next time.
