Manufacturing Service Technician
Location: Elgin, IL (South Elgin / Belvidere flexibility)
Pay: $35+/hour (flexibility based on experience)
Why This Role Is Different
This is not a typical field service role. The majority of service, testing, and troubleshooting work is performed on-site at the manufacturing facility or remotely, allowing for consistent schedules and limited travel. Travel is primarily tied to machine installations and customer acceptance, rather than ongoing service calls.
If you enjoy hands-on automation work but want less time on the road, stronger work-life balance, and exceptional long-term benefits, this role offers a rare combination of technical exposure and stability.
About the Opportunity
Join a growing custom automation manufacturer that designs, builds, and supports complex automated equipment for customers across multiple industries. This role sits at the center of machine build, testing, and commissioning, providing exposure to electrical, mechanical, and controls systems while working closely with engineering, manufacturing, and customers.
You’ll play a critical role in final machine assembly, testing, debugging, and installation, ensuring equipment meets performance, quality, and safety expectations before and after shipment.
What You’ll Do
-
Perform final assembly, testing, debugging, and validation of custom automated machinery prior to shipment.
-
Support machine installations and customer acceptance, with travel largely limited to install and commissioning phases (approximately up to 30%).
-
Provide remote and on-site technical support for machinery service, warranty, and upgrades—reducing the need for frequent customer-site travel.
-
Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing to implement machine upgrades, configuration changes, and corrective actions, documenting findings and solutions.
-
Conduct customer product testing, demonstrations, and compatibility evaluations to ensure equipment performs to specification.
-
Perform final quality control and performance inspections, including electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and functional checks.
-
Assist customers during acceptance visits and training sessions, acting as a technical resource and company representative.
What Makes You a Great Fit
-
3+ years of experience as a Field Service Technician, Manufacturing Test Technician, or Lead Machine Builder working with automated equipment.
-
Strong hands-on experience testing, diagnosing, and debugging automated machinery.
-
Proven ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and controls-related issues in complex systems.
-
Comfort working independently while collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams.
Technical Qualifications
-
Associate’s degree or technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience.
-
Working knowledge of PLC and electrical systems, including AC/DC fundamentals, ability to read ladder logic, and perform basic edits.
-
Ability to read and interpret 3D CAD drawings, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams.
-
Experience using basic machine shop equipment (drill press, grinder, mill, lathe).
-
Proficiency with hand tools and measurement equipment such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and scales.
