Should You Tell Your Boss You’re Job Searching?

Looking for a new role in the new year? It’s common to keep job searches private until it’s time for the two-weeks’ notice, but is this the best approach? Here’s what to consider.

Why You Might Tell Your Boss
  • You Have a Strong Relationship: Consider the nature of your relationship with your manager. For example, if you have a supportive and genuine connection, sharing your intentions might lead to constructive conversations about your goals and career path. However, reflect on your motivations. If your job search stems from dissatisfaction with the company or management, disclosing this could strain the relationship rather than improve your situation.
  • To Negotiate Higher Compensation or Benefits: If your job search is driven by a desire for higher pay or better benefits, approach the situation carefully. Thoroughly research market compensation for similar roles and prepare a tactful approach to discuss your findings with your manager. Frame the conversation as collaborative rather than confrontational to avoid misunderstandings. While this conversation may lead to improved terms, don’t enter it expecting an immediate counteroffer. If the company cannot meet your needs, you’ll be better prepared to explore external opportunities.
  • To Access Growth Opportunities: If your motivation is a desire for new responsibilities or career advancement, consider whether a promotion or lateral move within the company could fulfill your goals. Discuss long-term career aspirations with your manager and ask about internal opportunities. If no roles are available, management might understand the need for an external search and could even support you with recommendations or professional connections.
Potential Consequences

After disclosing a job search, anticipate potential changes in how management interacts with you. To mitigate negative reactions, maintain high performance and show continued commitment to your current role. Here are some possible outcomes:

  • Reallocated Resources: Management may prioritize employees who are fully committed to their roles, potentially redirecting key opportunities or resources away from you.
  • Team Dynamics: If your departure would significantly impact a lean team, your manager may feel stressed or upset. However, the advance notice allows them to plan for a smoother transition.
  • Misinterpretation as Resignation: Some managers might interpret your disclosure as a resignation. Depending on circumstances, they may choose to protect sensitive business information or refocus their efforts on team members who plan to stay long-term.

If your manager discovers your job search independently, respond honestly. Denying or avoiding the conversation could harm your professional reputation.

How to Make the Conversation Meaningful:

Making this conversation productive relies on a strong relationship with management and continued productivity and quality of work. Regardless of the motivation behind sharing, being transparent about the reasons for disclosing the job search is important. If wanting a referral, lead with gratitude, thank management for their support, and discuss how the next opportunity is important for continued development. Prioritize maintaining mutual respect throughout the conversation and ask for a reference only if it seems appropriate.

While job searching, make sure to maintain the same quality of work to display dedication and trustworthiness and make sure to never complain about an employer. At the end of the day, managers want to see their people succeed and may play a key role in supporting new opportunities.
