This role will play a critical part in oversight of talent acquisition, employee relations, talent management, benefits and the day-to-day HR operations, ensuring a positive employee experience and advancing the organization’s overall people strategy.
Human Resources Director Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement HR strategies aligned with organizational goals and mission
- Partner with executive leadership to support workforce planning and organizational development
- Serve as a trusted advisor on employee relations, performance management, and people-related decisions
- Build and foster a culture rooted in equity, inclusion, and engagement
- Oversee full-cycle recruitment strategy and execution, in partnership with hiring managers and HR Generalist
- Ensure effective hiring processes that prioritize quality, efficiency, and diversity
- Develop employer branding and talent pipeline strategies
- Design and oversee onboarding programs to ensure a strong start and long-term employee success
- Lead initiatives to improve employee engagement, retention, and overall experience
- Support performance management processes, including reviews and goal-setting
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and nonprofit regulations
- Oversee HR policies, procedures, and documentation, ensuring they are current and consistently applied
- Manage audits, reporting, and risk mitigation strategies
- Manage benefits administration strategy and vendor relationships
- Streamline and improve HR processes for efficiency and scalability
- Directly manage, mentor, and develop the HR Generalist
- Delegate and prioritize work effectively while maintaining visibility into day-to-day HR operations
- Foster a collaborative and high-performing HR function
Human Resources Director Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 7–10+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership or management experience
- Strong background in talent acquisition, HR operations, and compliance
- Experience working in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization preferred
- Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
- High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information
Location: Downtown Chicago, Hybrid, 4 days on-site + 1 day remote
