About the Organization
This is a well-established, $100M faith-based nonprofit headquartered in Chicago that provides long-term residential and support services to individuals with disabilities. The organization offers a full continuum of care—from healthcare and education to job training—on a vibrant, multi-acre campus and through nearby community programs. It also operates several mission-aligned social enterprises that give residents meaningful work experience.

The Opportunity
This newly created Controller position offers the chance to step into a leadership role during a key period of expansion. The current Controller is moving into a CFO role within an affiliated entity, creating a need for someone to take ownership of financial operations for the main organization. This role will report directly to the VP of Finance and lead a growing team, with high visibility across departments and strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Management & Reporting: Oversee all accounting functions, including monthly and year-end close, general ledger maintenance, and internal financial reporting in compliance with GAAP.
  • Audit & Compliance: Serve as the main point of contact for the annual external audit and ensure regulatory compliance, internal controls, and proper documentation.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads; perform ongoing forecasting, variance analysis, and financial planning.
  • Team Leadership: Manage a team of 4–5 accounting staff, with potential to grow; support training, development, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Process & Systems Improvement: Drive process enhancements across finance operations; lead the organization’s upcoming ERP system upgrade and help implement standardized procedures.
  • Strategic Support: Develop and monitor financial KPIs; provide insights to leadership on cost savings, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

Top Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA a plus).
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Prior experience managing a team is required.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector or with mission-aligned organizations is preferred but not required.
  • Interest in working for a values-based organization making a community impact.

This is a great opportunity for a hands-on accounting professional who thrives in a mission-driven environment, values work-life balance, and is eager to build and improve financial operations.
