The Controller will be responsible for leading all accounting and financial reporting activities for the organization. This role will play a crucial part in ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, managing budgets, overseeing grant reporting, and driving financial strategy in alignment with the organization’s mission. The ideal candidate will have experience in nonprofit financial management, strong leadership skills, and the ability to support strategic decision-making.
Controller Responsibilities:
- Oversee the organization’s financial operations, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance
- Ensure accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards
- Manage financial audits, tax filings, and grant compliance, working closely with external auditors and regulatory agencies
- Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets
- Lead the budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with senior leadership
- Monitor cash flow, financial performance, and funding sources to support operational sustainability
- Oversee payroll processing, accounts payable/receivable, and financial transactions
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to the Executive Director and Board of Directors to support strategic planning
- Ensure compliance with government funding requirements, donor-restricted funds, and grant accounting regulations
- Supervise and mentor the accounting team, fostering professional development and efficiency
Controller Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
- 7+ years of experience in financial management, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit organization
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting, GAAP and grant compliance
- Experience with financial software and systems; proficiency in QuickBooks, Sage Intacct or similar platforms preferred
- Proven leadership and team management skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to nonprofit financial management
