What do you do if you have over 10 years of work experience and your resume is too long?

If you have less than 10 years of experience, resumes should be less than one page; however, if you have over 10 years of work experience, two (or maximum three) pages are acceptable.

Ways to Shorten your Resume:

Be Brief

  • Make sure your descriptions are clear and to the point
  • Cut out the “fluff” – Minimize unnecessary words or vague phrases that don’t add content such as “performed assigned duties” or “worked on a variety of tasks including…”
  • Review each bullet and ask yourself, “so what?” - If it’s not adding something that will differentiate you from other candidates, get rid of it

Be Relevant

  • Only include relevant information that will help you in the job for which you’re applying
  • Tailor your bullet points by using keywords from the job description

Formatting

  • Font size should be between 10 and 12 – Do not shrink down to size 8 or 9
  • Reduce top and bottom margins if necessary (no less than 0.5 inches)
