I Don’t Have a Resume; Where Do I Begin?

Starting a resume from scratch can be a daunting process, so check out a few resume samples or use a resume template for extra help
Think of a resume as a 30-second “elevator pitch.” Make sure your resume effectively summarizes:
Contact Information – Make it easy for a potential employer to contact you by including:
- Full name
- Address
- Phone number (the best number where you can be reached)
- E-mail address
Employment History – Include the most relevant experiences and skills for the job you seek with your most recent position at the top
- The Basics
- Name of company and location
- Your job title
- Dates of employment
- A brief job description (use resume action verbs)
- What Makes You Stand Out
- Try to incorporate keywords from the job description to show you’re a good fit
- What were your responsibilities?
- What are the areas in which you specialize?
- What accomplishments can you highlight?
- Try to quantify statements to show tangible results – Did you grow revenues? Did you cut expenses – use numbers, dollars and percentages
- Think of the following:
- I did what?
- By doing what?
- Resulting in what? ($, #, %)
Educational Background
- Name of college or university
- City, state
- Year graduated
- Degree/major
- GPA
- Graduate school information (if applicable)
- Continuing professional development (if applicable)
Additional Information
- Are you fluent in a foreign language?
- Are you part of any professional affiliations?
- Have you received any awards?
- Do you have any publications or patents?
- Do you have specialized computer or technical skills?
