I Don’t Have a Resume; Where Do I Begin?

Starting a resume from scratch can be a daunting process, so check out a few resume samples or use a resume template for extra help

Think of a resume as a 30-second “elevator pitch.” Make sure your resume effectively summarizes:

Contact Information – Make it easy for a potential employer to contact you by including:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Phone number (the best number where you can be reached)
  • E-mail address

Employment History – Include the most relevant experiences and skills for the job you seek with your most recent position at the top

  • The Basics
    • Name of company and location
    • Your job title
    • Dates of employment
    • A brief job description (use resume action verbs)
  • What Makes You Stand Out
    • Try to incorporate keywords from the job description to show you’re a good fit
    • What were your responsibilities?
    • What are the areas in which you specialize?
    • What accomplishments can you highlight?
      • Try to quantify statements to show tangible results – Did you grow revenues? Did you cut expenses – use numbers, dollars and percentages
      • Think of the following:
        • I did what?
        • By doing what?
        • Resulting in what? ($, #, %)

Educational Background

  • Name of college or university
  • City, state
  • Year graduated
  • Degree/major
  • GPA
  • Graduate school information (if applicable)
  • Continuing professional development (if applicable)
