Every job application should be accompanied by a cover letter tailored for the specific position and company

For every application you submit, you should also craft a tailored cover letter for that company and position. A cover letter is your opportunity to convince an employer that they should bring you in for an interview, so be concise and compelling.

So how do you write an effective cover letter? Let’s break it down.

First Paragraph:

  • Introduce who you are and explain your background. If you are an experienced professional, state your position and the
company for which you work. If you are a recent grad, explain where you went to college, what you majored in and any other relevant information. If you are currently unemployed, describe your most recent position and responsibilities
  • State the position for which you are applying. Provide a few details of why you want the position and why you are qualified. This section is like a teaser; it gets the employer interested to read more

Body Paragraphs:

  • This is where you sell yourself! Refer directly back to the job requirements (if they are listed) and explain how previous
experiences qualify you for the job. Also describe what you can bring to the position, why you are the best candidate for the job and how you can make an immediate impact on the company. Don’t be modest here, mention major milestones in your career, as well as awards and achievements
  • State why you are interested in this position or company. Be as specific as possible, and use this opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the company. You can mention awards, achievements, advancements, etc., anything to make the employer see that you’ve done your homework

Closing Paragraph:

  • Reiterate your interest in the job and provide your contact information here. Both e-mail and phone number is appropriate.
Also state how you will follow-up to the application, whether it be calling in a few weeks or e-mailing the contact directly
  • If you have references, writing samples or a portfolio, you can also indicate that these can be furnished upon request
